Several States in the United States Frozen Due to Subzero Temperatures
|Almost 65 percent of the United States is frozen due to subzero temperatures as per CNN meteorologists Dave Hennen and Taylor Ward. The conditions are certainly not like early December but more like mid-January as subzero frozen temperatures are moving across the U.S.A. The Midwest witnessed heavy snow along with restricted visibility particularly in places such as Iowa, where around 50 cars got involved in a major pileup Monday morning. The crash occurred around 11 a.m. near Altoona due to heavy snowfall that took everybody by surprise and that resulted in slippery roads.
The Midwest Reeling Under Biting Cold
Chill advisories seem to have been issued already for parts of Minnesota and Dakotas. More than 1 foot of snow seems likely in certain parts of the region including the Great Lakes. Bitter cold conditions would persist across eastern Montana and northern Michigan and there would be single-digit highs and widespread subzero lows as forecasted by the National Weather Service. We understand that the cold front is all set to bring in ‘an arctic air mass’ to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic.
Dakota experienced minus 14-degrees in Bismarck and around minus 17-degrees in Fargo. Further National Weather Service office located in Grand Forks experienced a wind chill almost minus 42-degrees in McHenry.
Steady Subzero Temperatures in Many States
Numerous areas located in the Upper Midwest are frozen due to a biting freeze this week. Subzero temperatures prevail in many areas across the US states like Minnesota and North Dakota. These areas are reeling under bitter cold since the mercury dipped well below zero during the last few days.
Temperatures in Chanhassen in Minnesota dipped way below minus 4-degree Fahrenheit which is almost 18 degrees colder as compared to the low temperature on 9th December. Things are getting colder as Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport recorded 5 F early in the morning on Wednesday. The bitterly cold conditions became worse because of a bone-chilling steady breeze blowing over consistently during the past few days. As per the NWS, because of the wind chill, the temperatures at the airport have dipped to minus 20. Communities such as Minnesota, Duluth and some others are freezing because of the prevailing punishing cold and they have been compelled to open warming centers to provide shelter from this bone-chilling breeze that is continuing for days now.
Around Buffalo in New York, people are witnessing heavy lake effect snow that is blanketing several regions across Niagara County. Moreover, reports confirmed that snow totals reached almost 6 inches in Massachusetts particularly in regions around Brimfield and Worcester County. Even coastal areas experienced a truly wintry scene early on Wednesday morning.
Snow Slaps South
A snow cover would be developing 2,000 miles across Texas to Maine because of the chilling arctic air mass and the frontal system that is steadily moving across the entire eastern United States. As per reports, cities like Little Rock, Dallas, and Memphis could be experiencing light snow and minor accumulations. Washington, Philadelphia, and Nashville are likely to experience around 1 to almost 3 inches of snow. Meanwhile, it is expected that New York to Boston would be experiencing 2 to 4 inches of snow. East Coast experienced snow on Wednesday morning causing school closures and delays and disrupting morning commutes.
65 percent of the United States would continue to experience the winter whiplash and witness the plummeting temperatures. Several schools announced snow days and remain closed in the Northeast due to the deep freeze.
