Best European ski destinations for budget travelers

So, you have decided that visiting a ski resort will be your autumn holiday but your budget doesn’t allow you to fly to the Pyrenees or Alps?

Well if this is the case then no need to worry as there are plenty of other great ski resorts that are perfect for budget travelers.

The following list covers Europe’s up-and-coming ‘bargain’ ski resorts (from cheapest to most expensive) which should provide some inspiration.

Bulgaria – Pamporovo & Bansko

Pamporovo & Bansko are Bulgaria’s leading ski resorts; they may not enjoy the same altitude as many European countries but skiing here is still possible during June-September, and the price of a lift pass here is half that of many European resorts – approx €20 per day.

As well as the two Bulgarian resorts there are also over 30 smaller ski resorts in Bulgaria (ranging from 900m-2,260m) which provide excellent opportunities for budget skiers to enjoy skiing/snowboarding during the summer months.

Greece – Kalavrita & Vasilitsa

If you want to combine your holiday with some culture then Greece may be just what you need as its famous classical sites and islands can be visited at the same time as skiing or snowboarding here.

Kalavrita,

Situated on a plateau above sea level (1,200 m), surrounded by mountains and pine forests, is one of the most picturesque ski resorts in Greece. The lower section of Kalavrita has a well-maintained gondola and a dozen slopes catering to both beginners and experienced skiers/snowboarders.

Vasilitsa Ski Resort,

Situated in the Pindus Mountains at an altitude of between 1,200m and 2,000 m, offers excellent snow conditions from November through to April. It is located only 80km away from Athens.

Austria – Rosshutte & Schladming

If you want to take advantage of Europe’s biggest lift-served vertical (1,800m) then Austria may be just what you’re looking for as it boasts over 40 ski resorts, Rosshutte & Schladming are two of the best budget resorts in Austria.

Rosshutte (approx €29 per day)

It is a quaint Austrian town located at 1,450m offering both skiing and snowboarding as well as opportunities for hiking, cycling and glacier-walking. In addition, annual events such as the Rosshutte Spring Festival attract lots of visitors every year.

Schladming Ski Resort

Situated in Styria offers more than 100km of slopes on a variety of levels with 44 modern ski lifts and 60km of prepared runs to accommodate all levels from beginners through to professional skiers/snowboarders.

Finland – Yllasjarvi

Located on the Swedish side of the border Yllasjarvi is one of the best ski resorts in Finland, covering an area of 5.5 hectares there are 12 different slopes catering to all levels of skiing/snowboarding.

Although Yllasjarvi only has one hotel (where you’ll find very cheap accommodation) there are many other hotels/apartments which can be found nearby; budget travelers may also choose to rent their own apartment or stay in a Hostel.

Yllasjarvi Ski Resort offers free wi-fi (for those that need connection on their travels), low prices for lift passes and equipment, together with the opportunity to learn how to ski & snowboard all make this resort ideal for budget skiers/snowboarders.

Spain – Sierra Nevada & La Mussara

Sierra Nevada Ski Resort is located in the highest mountains of the European continent, offering those that enjoy skiing and snowboarding excellent conditions throughout the whole year and at all altitudes (the resort itself starts from 1,600m to 3,375 m).

La Mussara ski resort which is situated just a few kilometers from El Tarter mixes extensive slopes with an attractive natural environment consisting mainly of pine trees. There are also several opportunities for hikers and mountain bikers to use the same trails as skiers/snowboarders.

Czech Republic – Pec Pod Snezkou & Svoboda

Pec Pod Snezkou offers three different areas: two for skiing and one for snowboarding. At the same time, it has a ski school which allows you to get more from your holiday. Also if you want some downtime there’s an opportunity. To explore the surrounding area with its many castles, wooden churches, and historical towns.

Svoboda Ski Resort has situated in Western Bohemia approximately 70km from the city of Liberec. A popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. The resort itself offers 100km of slopes that cater for all levels from beginner through to professional skiers/snowboarders.

Slovakia – Jasna & Tatry

Most likely Slovakia will be on most people’s list but may have been put off. Due to it being out of the way or widely unknown. However, I can assure you it offers some of the best snow conditions in Europe. With an exceptional choice of slopes catering for every skiing/snowboarding level.

Jasna Ski Resort in Slovakia’s High Tatras is one of Europe’s most modern ski resorts. And during the winter season hosts various events such as international ice hockey matches. The resort itself offers 110km of trails to cater for all levels. If this hasn’t put you off maybe the price will, especially when compared to Western Europe. You can expect to pay around €20 per day if you take advantage of group discounts (over 15 people).

Conclusion:

Snowboarding & Skiing in Europe doesn’t have to be costly if you’re prepared to travel a little. Do some research, which leads me to the next question I received from a reader. “Where can I buy cheap ski lift passes online?”
