How to decorate a home in style: A quick guide to accessorizing your house
|Simple decorating tips for your home
There are 2 kinds of people in this world when it comes to decorating their home. Some like to leave it simple, clean, modern. Others prefer decoration overload with signs, pictures everywhere including half naked women on the walls (ok men too). Whatever you choose it is important that you try not to stay in one place for years. You do not want your home to look old or stale. That’s why I have created a little guide with 5 easy steps which will help you accessorize your space in style in no time!
The best thing about these small changes is that they cost almost nothing and can transform even the dullest room into an exciting new addition! So let’s get started!
1) Replace old doorknobs with shiny new ones
How many times have you entered your house or apartment and thought to yourself “I have been here a thousand times but this door knob never ever worked!” Sounds familiar? Well, it does not matter how amazing your front door looks if the first thing you see when going inside is a poorly decorated doorknob. Even more so, replacing a standard boring white doorknob can cost as little as $5! So go check out your doors and grab something glamorous from IKEA or any other store nearby. For example:
2) Get rid of old boring curtains
This one is obvious. You cannot expect anything special from an accessory that blends in with the walls. This is why it is important to buy bright colored curtains, tapestries or carpets for your windows and doors which will instantly create a livelier mood in the room. Here are some examples:
3) Add some flowers
Even if you do not consider yourself an interior designer there is no reason to shy away from purchasing nice looking (and pretty cheap!) flowers which will give the room that extra touch of liveliness and elegance!
Here we can see pink hydrangeas – 3 bunch for $10 at Trader Joe’s – and white daisies for $1/stem:
4) Refinish old furniture with paint and stain
Maybe you have heard about this one but let me explain what I mean. It is very important that the furniture in your house matches the walls and other room’s decor. If you have a traditional living room with brown walls but modern white couches it will look out of place no matter how hard you try to style it! In this case, what I recommend is going to a hardware store or any other paint shop and asking for help from one of the workers there. They usually have great advice when it comes to matching colors and will definitely guide you in the right direction. The same goes for staining old furniture which, if done correctly, can turn a tacky looking knick knack into something worthy of being displayed on MGM’s front porch!
5) Add some recycled elements
In order not to feel guilty for throwing old stuff out replace them with something new! This is why I highly recommend buying some recycled accessories from small businesses. I am sure you have heard of it before as it is the number 1 place for handmade products from all over the world. So let me show you some of my favorite stores:
At this point, you should know just how important and easy decorating can be and how simple changes can do wonders to your home’s interior! Have fun and good luck!
FAQs:
Q: How much money should I spend on decorating my home?
A: It really depends on the size of the room you are trying to decorate. For example, if it is a huge living room with cathedral ceilings and floor to ceiling windows I would say at least $500-$1000. If it’s just one wall however, you can get away with spending as little as $20!
Q: What should I know about buying accessories/decorations for my house?
A: When shopping for decorations always keep quality in mind! You do not want to buy something that will break after being moved around a couple of times. Make sure it isn’t made from cheap materials or painted because you might have difficulties returning.
Conclusion:
After reading this walking into your own house will become a completely new experience! So get out there and start looking for some great accessories which turn an ordinary room into something glamorous. You can easily find pieces of furniture, plants or even paints at any local store around you so have fun with it!
If you feel like decorating is too much work then start with just one wall in your bedroom, living room or dining area. It does not matter how simple it is because imagination can do wonders! If properly done even the smallest change to the walls or floors of your home can have a huge effect on its overall appearance.
