7 Reasons Why You Are Suddenly So Obsessed with Home Decor

“Designers, you’ve been warned! Home decor is the new black. What was once a stylish choice reserved for those with a knack for mixing patterns and textures has quickly become accessible to everyone from teens to teachers? As more and more people embrace their inner interior design divas, they’re taking up hobbies like DIYing furniture and creating unique wall art that reflects their personalities. Whether your space is a complete wreck or simply in need of a little TLC, here are 7 reasons why you might find yourself redecorating in 2015.”

Kara Lenz’s “7 Reasons Why You Are Suddenly So Obsessed with Home Decor” article for Pure Wow started off as such:

“The truth is, home decor isn’t just for people with a knack for mixing patterns and textures anymore. With more and more DIY projects hitting the web (we’ve got you cover on those!), it’s now within everyone’s reach to create looks that reflect their unique sense of style.”

From Trend to Hobby to Obsession!

Gone are the days where families would gather around and watch Design Star or Flip that House. Today we’re seeing an increase in DIY projects taking over our Pinterest boards and blogs, design competitions like HGTV’s Design Star, and reality shows like Love it or List it Vancouver. If you take a look at the magazine this January you will see something called DIY Mania taking over the pages.

This is another one of those personal preference posts because I happen to love all things design, but not everyone has this same addiction.

Here are my 7 reasons why people who don’t have an eye for design are suddenly so obsessed with home decor:

1) There are now thousands of blogs dedicating to interior decorating or simple style spaces on a budget. It’s an ever-growing community and it only takes a few minutes before you become completely addicted. Do you think you can handle it? Here’s your first blog: Nesting Place

2) There’s nothing like waking up on Monday morning and seeing what new items hit the shelves at your local dollar store. It seems that dollar stores across North America have been stocking up on home decor and many items are starting to resemble items you see at the big box retailers. It’s a great way for those on a budget to create looks they love without breaking the bank.

3) Everyone is redecorating, but no one seems to be speaking out about it! I can’t tell you how many times my husband has heard, “I’m just redecorating” when he mentions that something in our house is new or different. Redecoration is what we do instead of renovation – it simply refers to changing the look of your space without doing major work. If you’re not feeling renovations financially or emotionally then this might be an easy alternative for you!

4) So many stores have great sales going on right now and their inventory is moving. If you love the look of a space displayed in a store but can’t afford to buy everything, just pick one area that speaks to you and add it! I see so many people pick up items from Big Box retailers, home decor stores, or kitchen supply stores for less than half price during these sales. It’s an easy way to create looks that cost much less than if you bought all new items.

5) There is a lot of pressure to keep your house looking great at all times when everyone comes over – even if they only come over once a year for family dinners. We don’t have [the time or energy most days but we still want our house to look amazing! What I do is simply create a new vignette or design element in each room when guests come over. When you change the look of your space mostly it becomes easier to keep everything looking great. Because there’s not much time to get upset about dust bunnies everywhere – right? 6) You’ve finally taken the plunge and found yourself working in the real estate industry. Why not make your clients’ or customers’ homes look amazing while you or they are waiting for their home (or yours) to sell? As most Realtors know, making small changes like rearranging furniture can make all the difference when selling your home. Oh, and when the sale finally goes through that new couch is all yours!

7) You’ve just bought or are about to buy your first home and there are major changes you’re going to have to make. Its way easier to just do everything yourself, right? If you can’t rip up the old carpet or tile right this minute, then buy some rugs in the interim until you find time for an upgrade. There’s no need to wait until there are unlimited funds in your account because with a few creative decorating ideas every dollar counts! So there you have it – six ways to makeover your space on a budget! It’s amazing what a little time and creativity can do for any room. There is nothing more rewarding than taking something that was once undesirable and making it into something fabulous.
